Why "multiply by 7" is wrong.
The popular rule of multiplying a dog's age by 7 to get their human age has been widely circulated for decades but it was never based on actual science. It's a convenient round number that a 1920s ad campaign helped popularize, not a veterinary formula.
The reality is much more nuanced. A dog's first year of life involves massive physical development — reaching sexual maturity, full size (in smaller breeds), and cognitive development that in humans would take 15 or more years. After that initial explosive growth, aging slows and the exact rate depends heavily on how big the dog is.
The key insight
A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human regardless of size. But after that, size diverges the aging rate dramatically.

Our calculator uses formulas based on guidlines released by organizations such as the American Kennel Club (AKC). It works as follows:

As an example: a 3-year-old small dog (like a Chihuahua) = 15 + 9 + 5 = 29 human years. The same-aged large dog = 15 + 9 + 6 = 30 human years. By age 10, that gap widens. The small dog is 56 and the large dog is 66 - a full 10-year difference.
Why size affects aging so dramatically.
Body size plays an important role in how dogs age. Research published in The Size–Life Span Trade-Off Decomposed: Why Large Dogs Die Young — The American Naturalist found that across breeds, every 4.4 lbs (2 kg) increase in body mass was associated with approximately one month less life expectancy. The researchers found that this difference was largely explained by larger breeds aging at a faster rate rather than simply having a higher baseline risk of death. This helps explain why large and giant breeds generally have shorter lifespans than smaller dogs. More recent research into canine biological aging has also found evidence of accelerated epigenetic aging in larger breeds.
Veterinary life stages reflect these differences. Rather than assigning every dog a fixed age at which they become "senior," AAHA — Canine Life Stage Definitions defines the senior stage as the final 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan. Because expected lifespan varies considerably by breed and size, larger dogs may therefore enter their senior life stage earlier than smaller, longer-lived dogs.
Practical implication for giant breed owners
Don't rely on chronological age or a human-years conversion alone to decide when senior care should begin. Your dog's breed, expected lifespan, size, health history, and individual risk factors all matter. As large and giant breeds approach the later portion of their expected lifespan, talk with your veterinarian about when to begin senior-focused preventive care in accordance with the 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats and whether additional screening is appropriate.
Life stages and what they mean for care.
Our calculator maps your dog's human-equivalent age to one of the following life stages. These stages have real implications for veterinary care (Based on AAHA — Canine Life Stage Definitions):
- Puppy From birth until rapid growth ends, typically around 6–9 months depending on breed and size. Puppies require frequent veterinary care as they grow, with particular attention to appropriate nutrition, vaccinations, parasite prevention, socialization, behavior, dental health, and healthy development.
- Young Adult From the end of rapid growth until physical and social maturity, which most dogs reach by around 3–4 years of age. Preventive healthcare remains important during this stage, including maintaining a healthy weight, appropriate nutrition and exercise, dental care, parasite prevention, vaccinations, and monitoring behavior and development. AAHA recommends veterinary examinations approximately every 6–12 months, depending on the individual dog.
- Mature Adult From physical and social maturity until the beginning of the final 25% of the dog's estimated lifespan. Because lifespan varies considerably by breed and size, there isn't a universal age at which every dog enters this stage. Veterinary care increasingly focuses on maintaining healthy weight and muscle condition, mobility, dental health, and detecting changes in health or behavior early. Wellness examinations are generally recommended every 6–12 months based on individual needs.
- Senior The final 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan through the end of life. This means larger, shorter-lived breeds may enter their senior stage earlier than smaller, longer-lived dogs. Senior dogs generally benefit from more frequent health assessments and diagnostic screening. AAHA recommends physical examinations at least twice a year for senior dogs, with routine bloodwork and additional testing when appropriate. Nutrition, mobility, pain, cognitive changes, dental health, and overall quality of life also become increasingly important considerations.
- Geriatric End-of-life is not defined by reaching a specific chronological or human-equivalent age. When a dog develops a terminal illness or experiences a significant decline in quality of life, veterinary care may shift toward pain management, palliative or hospice care, and maintaining comfort. Decisions should be based on the individual dog's condition and quality of life in consultation with a veterinarian.
The science behind the numbers.
Research into canine aging shows that converting dog years to human years isn't as simple as multiplying by seven. A study by researchers at the University of California San Diego, published in Cell Systems in 2020 (Wang et al. — Quantitative Translation of Dog-to-Human Aging by Conserved Remodeling of the DNA Methylome), compared age-related DNA methylation patterns in dogs and humans. The researchers identified a nonlinear relationship between the two and proposed the formula human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. The study provides fascinating insight into how biological aging may correspond between dogs and humans, but it was based on 104 Labrador Retrievers and wasn't designed as a universal age calculator for every breed. More recent research into canine epigenetic clocks has expanded across many breeds, highlighting how our understanding of biological aging in dogs continues to evolve.
For our calculator, we use the simpler age-conversion guidelines commonly cited by the American Kennel Club: the first year of a medium-sized dog's life is approximately 15 human years, the second brings them to about 24, and each year after that represents roughly five human years. We also account for size in later years, since smaller and larger dogs age differently. Human-age conversions should always be treated as estimates rather than veterinary life-stage assessments. For healthcare decisions, organizations such as AAHA recommend considering a dog's actual age alongside their breed, size, health, lifestyle, and expected lifespan rather than relying on a human-years conversion alone.
